How to measure ring size at home

Wrap a piece of non-stretchy string or a thin strip of paper around the base of your finger, snug but not tight. Mark where it overlaps, lay it flat on a ruler and measure the length in millimetres. That is the inside circumference you need. Type it into RingSizeChart and it gives your size in every system. The example is 54 mm, about a US 6¾.

Print at 100% (actual size, not "fit to page"). Check the 60 mm bar with a ruler first. Lay a ring that fits on the circles: the right size is the circle whose outline sits just inside the ring's inner edge. Or cut out the strip, wrap it around your finger and read the size where the end meets.

For half sizes, read between the marks.

Saved you some time? Leave a tip, entirely optional.

Measure two or three times, at the end of the day when fingers are largest, and check that the ring will pass over your knuckle.

How the sizes are defined

RingSizeChart converts every size to the inside circumference in millimetres and finds the nearest size in each system:

Sizes in different systems rarely line up exactly, and jewellers' charts differ by up to half a size. Fit also depends on band width, comfort-fit profiles and temperature. For an expensive ring, have your finger sized by a jeweller.

Frequently asked questions

Is the string method accurate?

It is usually within about half a size. String can stretch or squash, so a paper strip or measuring a ring that fits is more reliable.

Should I measure my knuckle?

If your knuckle is larger than the base of your finger, measure both and choose a size between them so the ring passes over.

Which hand should I measure?

The hand you will wear the ring on; dominant-hand fingers are often slightly larger.

Is RingSizeChart free?

Yes, with no sign-up or ads.

Is my size saved?

Yes, in this browser only.
